As a Graduate Writing Consultant, you will play a vital role in helping students develop their writing skills, build their confidence, and achieve their academic goals.
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Graduate Writing Consultant to join our team at the Learning Commons. As a Graduate Writing Consultant, you will work closely with students, faculty, and staff to provide writing support, develop resources, and promote academic excellence. This is an exciting opportunity for aspiring educators and writing professionals to gain valuable experience, develop their skills, and make a meaningful contribution to the academic community.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one writing support to students, including face-to-face and online consultations
- Develop and implement writing resources, workshops, and other academic support programs
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to promote academic excellence and student success
- Assist with administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, maintaining student records, and preparing resources
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance writing skills and knowledge
- Represent the Learning Commons at university events and promote its services to the academic community
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following essential qualifications:
- Be a currently enrolled University of North Texas at Dallas student making satisfactory progress toward a graduate level degree
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Be recommended by a faculty member who can attest to your writing skills
- Possess intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in English composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Have excellent written and oral communication skills
- Be able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Ability to work 12-19 hours per week
- Knowledge of University academic policy, procedure, and practices
- Prior tutoring experience
- Ability to work under considerable pressure and adjust to constant changes
Skills and Competencies
To succeed in this role, you will need to possess the following skills and competencies:
- Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
- Empathy and the ability to relate to the diverse student body population at UNT Dallas
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with the general public
- Basic MS Office skills
- Ability to operate a variety of office machines, including personal computers, telephones, and copiers
- Ability to use web-based software, such as Zoom, to tutor students online
