VP of Business Operations and Strategy – epocrates

We are looking for a VP of Business Operations and Strategy to join our epocrates division here at athenahealth. In this role, the VP of Business Operations and Strategy will serve as the commercial architect for epocrates’ next phase of growth. This is a newly created role focused on revenue optimization, audience monetization, and operational excellence, with a core emphasis on scaling our membership and subscription business.

This individual will own the business model strategy for both free and premium user tiers, define how we package and price value across different customer segments, and stand up the processes and infrastructure needed to support sustainable topline growth. The VP of Business Operations and Strategy will partner closely with Product, Editorial, and Sales to drive alignment between what we build and how we commercialize it.

This role is a focused leadership role for someone who understands how to run a modern media- and data-driven business in healthcare or similarly complex B2B/B2C. This role is pivotal in shaping the commercial future of epocrates. As VP of Business Operations and Strategy, this individual will define how we grow, what we sell, and how we operationalize success while bringing the discipline and creativity required to scale a trusted brand into a modern, data-powered healthcare platform with resilient, diversified revenue streams.

The Team: epocrates is transforming into the essential daily-use source of healthcare market and clinical intelligence—trusted by professionals, sponsored by industry, and powered by real-time insights. We sit at the intersection of clinical utility, real-time data, and healthcare media. As we evolve our offerings and audience engagement, we’re seeking a commercial-minded executive to operationalize and scale our business strategy with precision and speed.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the definition and execution of epocrates’ membership and subscription strategy—including pricing, packaging, freemium/premium tiering, engagement, audience strategy and development, and retention models.

  • Drive cross-functional revenue strategies, including ad monetization, data licensing, CME opportunities, and direct-to-HCP offerings. Translate product-market fit into scalable business models that increase the Total Lifetime Value of the epocrates user.

  • Work cross-functionally to build and operationalize dashboards, forecasting models, and KPI frameworks that connect user engagement to business outcomes across free and paid audiences.

  • Partner with Product, Editorial, and Sales leaders to align new offerings (e.g., specialty briefings, real-time dashboards, GenAI tools) with acquisition and monetization strategies.

  • Stand up and optimize the business processes needed to support rapid iteration across pricing experiments, lifecycle marketing, customer segmentation, and A/B testing.

  • Lead the development of insights around competitive offerings, market dynamics, commercial partner needs, and emerging business models.

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, communications, or related field. Masters preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in commercial operations, business strategy, or growth leadership—preferably in digital health, healthcare media, or B2B media.

  • Proven track record scaling a recurring revenue business model (subscription, membership, or SaaS), ideally with both individual and enterprise customer segments.

  • Strong command of pricing strategy, user acquisition and retention dynamics, and data-informed monetization experiments.

  • Fluency in B2B and B2C healthcare business models—including how to segment, serve, and monetize clinicians, pharma stakeholders, and healthcare systems.

  • Highly analytical and metrics-driven; comfortable designing and interpreting dashboards, revenue forecasts, cohort analyses, and pricing tests.

  • Comfortable in fast-paced environments and able to navigate ambiguity with a bias toward execution.
