As a member of this team, you'll be working on cutting-edge distributed database systems, collaborating with skilled engineers, and contributing to the development of a new source of truth for our client, listing, and financial data.

The Opportunity

We're seeking Staff or Senior Staff-level engineers who are passionate about tackling complex technical challenges in distributed database systems, data storage, and cloud infrastructure. As an engineer at Blithequark, you'll have the opportunity to:

• Design and build a new source of truth, open-source NewSql database running on top of stateful Kubernetes
• Work with a talented team of engineers on a cutting-edge distributed database framework
• Provide guidance to other teams on the effective use of technologies and their application in large-scale architecture and performance improvement
• Collaborate with vendor and open-source communities to define the right approach for database scalability and reliability

Key Responsibilities

Database Substrate

• Design systems and maintain the overall ecosystem around our NewSql database's monitoring, authorizations, service discovery integration, and more
• Be the resident expert on data storage solutions, providing guidance to teams on effective use and implementation
• Configure, automate, and document database operations, de-noising for the team

Database Scalability

• Lead case studies of all Blithequark's disaster recovery scenarios, influencing existing open-source and designing software that fulfills Blithequark's requirements on database backup and restore, cross-region data flexibility, and more
• Collaborate with vendor and open-source communities to define the right approach for database scalability and reliability

Database Server

• Read and understand existing open-source code to comprehend the framework's functionality and design
• Propose and implement upgrades to the database framework, ensuring performance, scalability, and reliability
• Contribute code, documentation, and bug fixes back to the open-source community

Mentorship and Leadership

• Participate in regular office hours and engage with key clients to gather insights on pain points and gaps
• Mentor junior team members and guide them on iterating on designs and solving the right problems
• Provide insightful design and code review feedback

Requirements

Essential Qualifications

• 9+ years of relevant industry experience
• Hands-on experience building and operating distributed NoSQL or NewSQL databases and services
• Strong understanding of systems and infrastructure basics
• Experience in deep diving and owning complex code bases
• Skill for writing clean, clear, testable, and effective code
• Ability to decompose large-scale distributed systems and organize monitoring metrics, failure scenarios, and troubleshoot them efficiently
• Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills in a remote-work space
• Familiarity with a public cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their Storage, VM, Networking, Security offerings

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Kubernetes and containerized systems
• Knowledge of open-source databases and database technologies
• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and version control systems
