About the Department and College

The Department of Biology is part of the College of Science and Mathematics, one of nine colleges at CSUN. With 35 tenure-track faculty members, approximately 1400 undergraduate majors, and 70 graduate students, the department is renowned for its excellence in teaching, scholarship, and student engagement. The department offers a wide range of courses and research opportunities in areas such as Cell Biology, Physiology, Marine Biology, Microbiology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Developmental Biology, and Genetics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach a variety of courses, including lower-division core courses (e.g., Biology 107: Biological Principles II) and upper-division core courses (e.g., Biology 380: Cell Biology), as well as specialty courses with laboratory components in Cell Biology, Animal Physiology, and/or Immunology.
  • Develop and teach new courses in their area of expertise.
  • Establish an externally-funded research program that engages undergraduate and Master's student trainees in fundamental cellular processes, such as stem cell biology, animal physiology, human physiology, immunology, cancer biology, or endocrinology.
  • Mentor students through research projects, publications, and presentations.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service, including assessment of student learning and faculty meetings.
  • Contribute to the department's commitment to equity and inclusion through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Essential Qualifications

  • A terminal graduate degree (PhD or equivalent) in cellular/molecular biology or physiology, or a closely related field.
  • College or University-level teaching experience (in-person or online).
  • Demonstrated experience teaching or expertise relevant to courses such as Biology 380 (Cell Biology), Biology 476 (Topics in Stem Cell Biology Research), Biology 482 (Animal Physiology), and/or Biology 485 (Immunology).
  • Postdoctoral training.
  • A strong record of research productivity, as evidenced by recent peer-reviewed publications.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Evidence of success in mentoring students, including publication of research papers with mentee co-authors, mentee research presentations, or mentee job placement outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience engaging with a diverse student body and using culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Evidence of creating a student-centered learning environment.
  • Research experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Inclusive approaches to mentoring.
  • Teaching experience as an instructor of record for courses such as Biology 107 (Biological Principles II) and Biology 380 (Cell Biology).
  • Potential to develop an externally funded research program that engages both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Effective collaboration with colleagues in teaching, research, and service activities.
  • Community-based outreach activities.

What We Offer

CSUN offers a competitive salary range of $80,000 to $88,200, depending on qualifications.
