Student Assistant - Data Visualization (Remote)

The California Energy Commission is seeking to hire one student assistant to support the development of tools that provide visual and situational updates on natural gas systems. These tools play a key role in monitoring energy system reliability and supporting high-level decision-making. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at an accredited college or university. Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting. Majors/Fields of Study Computer Information Studies, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, Management Information Systems, Petroleum Engineering, Public Policy and Administration, Business Analytics, or any close related field. Work Schedule F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Additional Work Schedule Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Compensation $17.70 - $28.08 per hour Minimum Qualifications • Possess a cumulative 2.0 GPA or above. • Experience with Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel. • Basic SharePoint and Microsoft Teams knowledge. • Proficiency in Python, especially for data manipulation • Experience with Pandas, NumPy, and general data wrangling • Ability to work in a team environment and provide excellent customer service. • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of Commission staff. • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. • Good analytical and critical thinking skills. • Ability to manage multiple priorities and objectives. • Good organizational skills and attention to detail. • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in person.Proficient in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax to effectively review and improve written content. Preferred Qualifications • Familiarity with AWS, particularly S3 for data storage. • Familiarity with Snowflake: data loading, SQL, and cloud-based ingestion pipelines. • Experience with Tableau (including Tableau Server). • Ability to connect Tableau with cloud platforms like AWS and Snowflake. • Familiarity with data-fetching libraries and ability to interact with APIs using Python.Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority (documentation required). Duties and Responsibilities • Maintain data pipelines and visual tools to monitor natural gas system and market conditions. • Enhance Tableau dashboards to present natural gas data clearly and effectively.Support the integration of data from APIs and public datasets into dashboards and ensure seamless connectivity with cloud platforms. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in an remote environment. Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
