Job Summary

The HEOP AND CSTEP PROGRAM COUNSELOR will be responsible for delivering programs and activities to students eligible for the HEOP, CSTEP, and/or CSTEM programs. This will include producing and disseminating literature promoting opportunities for HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM participants, maintaining a web page advertising HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM activities and services, and utilizing creative/interactive technology to engage students. The successful candidate will provide regular intrusive one-on-one academic, personal, and career counseling to HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM participants, working with students to develop long-term goals and strategies to achieve academic success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver programs and activities to students eligible for the HEOP, CSTEP, and/or CSTEM programs
  • Produce and disseminate literature promoting opportunities for HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM participants
  • Maintain a web page advertising HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM activities and services and utilize creative/interactive technology
  • Provide regular intrusive one-on-one academic, personal, and career counseling to HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM participants
  • Work with students to develop long-term goals and strategies to achieve academic success
  • Consult with the Office of Access Opportunity, and Achievement team regarding intervention strategies for struggling students
  • Consult with and make referrals to: Academic Services Specialists, Tutoring Services, Student Financial Services, Faculty Advisors, Career Services, Student Accessibility Services (SAS), and the Office of Counseling and Wellness, as examples
  • Document records of service for program students, as applicable and appropriate
  • Assist with the selection of prospective HEOP participants by reviewing Admissions files, conducting interviews, presenting to Admissions groups, and traveling to recruitment events
  • Develop and implement appropriate interventions for HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM participants, such as academic workshops, personal and professional seminars, cultural events, faculty/professional mentoring interventions, community services activities, and travel to conferences for HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM participants
  • Collaborate with Career Services, Center for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice (IDEAS), Student Engagement, and the various schools regarding effective delivery of student development interventions
  • Make all provisions for student travel and accompany students as warranted
  • Assist with updating and monitoring program budgets
  • Collect, organize, and analyze data on current HEOP, CSTEP, and CSTEM participants and program graduates
  • Maintain accurate, auditable records and produce annual retention and other reports

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a higher education/student services environment
  • Considerable experience working with a diverse student population in a counseling or academic advising role
  • Knowledge and understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of higher education opportunity programs
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to represent the College to prospective students, families, and public constituencies
  • A valid New York state driver's license and driving record acceptable to the College

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience working with state and/or federal grant reporting
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or weekend hours
  • Strong ability to follow guidelines and protocols
  • A minimum of at least 9 graduate school credits leading towards a master's degree

Compensation, Perks, and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary range of $55,000 - $57,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
