As a vital member of Mercy’s Coding Operations, you will be entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Clinical Documentation Review: Thoroughly examine inpatient, outpatient, and professional service records to extract clinically accurate information.
  • Code Assignment: Assign appropriate ICD‑10‑CM diagnosis codes, CPT/HCPCS procedure codes, and related modifiers in compliance with official coding guidelines.
  • Compliance & Ethics: Uphold the Standards of Ethical Coding established by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and ensure adherence to all federal, state, and payer regulations.
  • Quality Assurance: Conduct regular audits of coded records, identify trends, and implement corrective actions to improve coding accuracy.
  • Collaboration: Partner with physicians, clinical documentation improvement (CDI) specialists, and billing teams to clarify documentation and resolve coding queries.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze coding data for DRG, APC, and RVU metrics to support financial performance and quality reporting initiatives.
  • Education & Mentorship: Provide guidance and informal training to junior coders and support staff on coding best practices.

Essential Qualifications – What You Must Bring

To succeed in this role, you will need a combination of education, certification, and hands‑on experience that demonstrates mastery of medical coding principles and a proven track record of delivering high‑quality results.

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or related field strongly preferred.
  • Certifications (must have at least one):
    • Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT)
    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
    • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
    • Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC)
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of professional coding experience in an acute‑care inpatient, outpatient hospital, or professional services setting, with demonstrated proficiency in ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of MS‑DRG, APC, MPFS/RVU, POA (Present on Admission), and HAC (Hospital‑Acquired Condition) coding concepts.
