From pioneering sustainable sourcing practices to leveraging cutting‑edge technology that reshapes the shopping experience, Walmart is at the forefront of an industry that touches the lives of millions every day. As a member of the Walmart family, you become a catalyst for change, influencing everything from store operations to community outreach, all while building a career that truly matters.

Program Overview – Coach & Operations Management Trainee

We are seeking motivated, ambitious individuals to join our Coach & Operations Management Trainee pipeline. This fast‑track development program is designed for people who are eager to learn, grow, and lead within one of the world’s largest retailers. The role is fully remote, with a strong connection to our Ellsworth, ME hub, offering immediate start dates for qualified candidates.

In this position, you will partner directly with store leaders, associate teams, and cross‑functional partners to drive operational excellence, enhance customer experiences, and deliver profitable results. You’ll rotate through core business functions—customer service, merchandising, financial performance, and people development—building the breadth of expertise required to become a future Operations Manager.

Key Responsibilities – What You’ll Do Every Day

As a Trainee, you will be immersed in real‑world challenges and opportunities. Your day‑to‑day responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Team Coaching & Development: Conduct “Tour‑to‑Teach” sessions, observe associate performance on the floor, and deliver actionable feedback that elevates service standards.
  • Customer Service Leadership: Model the “One Best Way” (OBW) service model, resolve complex customer issues, and spearhead community outreach programs that reinforce Walmart’s role as a trusted neighborhood partner.
  • Financial Stewardship: Analyze P&L statements, assist with budgeting and forecasting, and implement cost‑control measures that align expenses with sales targets.
  • Merchandising & Inventory Management: Oversee product presentation, seasonal transitions, and inventory flow, ensuring shelves are stocked efficiently and shrink is minimized.
  • People Management: Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of hourly associates; set clear performance expectations; recognize achievements; and promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Process Improvement: Identify operational bottlenecks, develop corrective action plans, and champion continuous‑learning initiatives that drive higher quality outcomes.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Build strong relationships with internal partners—such as merchandising, loss prevention, and technology teams—to align on business objectives and deliver results.
  • Compliance & Ethics: Uphold Walmart’s policies and ethical standards, support the Open Door Policy, and ensure all activities meet legal and regulatory requirements (including firearms‑specific background checks where applicable).

Essential Qualifications – What You Need to Succeed

  • Education: Minimum of 2 years of college coursework or equivalent experience.
  • Retail or Supervisory Experience: At least 1 year of retail experience combined with 1 year of supervisory or leadership responsibility, or 2 years of general work experience plus 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication abilities; comfortable presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to interpret basic financial data (P&L, budget variance) and make data‑driven recommendations.
  • Technology Proficiency: Comfortable using Walmart’s operational platforms, basic Microsoft Office Suite, and emerging retail technologies.
  • Integrity & Dependability: Strong work ethic, reliability, and a commitment to ethical conduct.
  • Legal Requirements: Ability to pass a firearms‑specific Criminal Background Check and complete Firearms Authorized Training if assigned to locations that sell firearms; or hold a state‑issued Certificate of Eligibility for ammunition‑only stores.

Preferred Qualifications – What Will Set You Apart

  • Leadership Certifications: Completion of People and Business Leadership certificates via Live Better U.
  • Supervisory Experience: Experience managing five or more direct reports, with responsibility for performance management, hiring, coaching, and termination.
  • Community Involvement: Demonstrated participation in outreach programs, volunteer initiatives, or local charity work.
  • Multilingual Ability: Fluency in languages besides English to better serve diverse customer bases.
