Why Join Our Team?

  • Immediate Start: Positions are open now – you can begin making an impact within weeks.
  • Attractive Compensation: Competitive base salary plus a $2,000 sign‑on bonus (disbursed in two installments after 3 and 9 months of employment).
  • Career Advancement: Clear pathways from Spec I (D3) to Spec II (E3) and beyond, with mentorship, training, and internal mobility programs.
  • Remote‑First Culture: Work from anywhere in the U.S., with the technology, resources, and collaborative community you need to thrive.
  • Work‑Life Balance: Flexible scheduling, paid time off, and support for overtime during catastrophe events, all while maintaining a healthy personal life.

Role Overview – Virtual Material Damage Claims Specialist (I/II)

As a Virtual Material Damage Claims Specialist, you will be the primary point of contact for customers filing automobile damage claims. You will investigate, evaluate, and resolve claims ranging from minor dents to total loss scenarios, ensuring each policyholder receives a fair, timely, and transparent outcome. Your expertise in vehicle repair processes, vendor negotiations, and claims best practices will be essential in delivering the high‑quality service that Nationwide’s brand promises.

Core Responsibilities

  • Claims Investigation & Evaluation: Review incident reports, photographs, and repair estimates to determine liability, coverage applicability, and the extent of damage for drivable, non‑drivable, and specialty vehicles.
  • Estimate Development: Generate accurate material damage estimates using multiple industry‑standard software platforms, clearly documenting parts, labor, and material costs.
  • Negotiation & Settlement: Communicate with auto repair facilities, independent adjusters, claimants, and policyholders to negotiate fair settlements while adhering to company policies and legal requirements.
  • Customer Communication: Provide compassionate, clear, and proactive updates via phone, email, and written correspondence. Resolve inquiries, address concerns, and educate customers about the claims process.
  • Fraud & Subrogation Analysis: Identify potential fraudulent activity and coordinate with subrogation teams to protect the company’s financial interests.
  • Mentorship & Training: Assist in onboarding new hires, share best practices, and act as a subject‑matter expert within the team.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in process‑enhancement initiatives, suggest technology upgrades, and contribute to knowledge‑base articles to streamline workflow.

Reporting Structure

You will report directly to a Claims Manager or Supervisor, functioning as an individual contributor while collaborating closely with peer adjusters, the underwriting team, and the legal department.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field is preferred; equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • Licensing/Certifications: State insurance adjusting license where required. Completion of Nationwide’s internal claims certification program. Additional credentials such as CPCU, ICAR, or ASE are strong differentiators.
  • Experience: 3‑5 years of proven success in insurance claims handling, customer service, or automotive repair estimation. Direct material/physical damage claims experience is highly valued.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with claims management systems (e.g., Guidewire, Xactimate, ClaimsXpress) and Microsoft Office Suite; ability to analyze photos and diagrams to assess damage.
  • Core Competencies: Strong analytical thinking, negotiation prowess, and the ability to make confident decisions under pressure.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to convey complex information simply and empathetically.
  • Organizational Ability: Demonstrated talent for prioritizing multiple claims, meeting service level agreements (SLAs), and maintaining meticulous documentation.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills

  • Experience in a high‑volume, fast‑paced claims center or a similar environment.
  • Knowledge of catastrophe (CAT) workflow and the ability to respond to emergency claim surges.
  • Background in automotive repair shop management or parts procurement.
  • Familiarity with fraud detection tools and subrogation processes.
  • Fluency in a second language, enhancing service to diverse policyholder populations.
  • Demonstrated leadership through mentorship, training, or team‑lead roles.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role is measured by a combination of quantitative and qualitative metrics:

  • Claims Accuracy: Maintaining a high rate of correct estimates and settlements.
  • Timeliness: Consistently meeting or exceeding SLA targets for claim closure.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Achieving strong CSAT scores and positive feedback from policyholders.
