Position Overview

Title: Remote Certified Medical Assistant / Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Patient Care Specialist
Location: Work‑from‑home (primary service area: Hot Springs, South Dakota) – supporting the MHMC Hot Springs Primary Care Clinic
Employment Type: Full‑time, 40 hours per week, regular schedule

Core Responsibilities – What Your Day Will Look Like

As a remote Clinical Support Specialist, you will blend clinical expertise with exceptional communication skills to deliver seamless virtual patient experiences. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Virtual Examination Room Preparation: Ensure that virtual examination tools, electronic health record (EHR) templates, and telehealth platforms are ready and compliant with clinic standards before each patient encounter.
  • Patient Intake & Vital Sign Collection: Conduct remote triage, gather medical histories, record patient‑reported vitals (blood pressure, temperature, pulse) via secure apps, and verify insurance information.
  • Medication Administration & Documentation: Administer unit‑dose medications and immunizations under the guidance of the supervising provider, accurately charting each dose in the EHR while adhering to state regulations.
  • Diagnostic Testing Coordination: Perform point‑of‑care tests such as EKGs, rapid strep, urinalysis, and other CLIA‑waived laboratory assessments using portable equipment; upload results promptly for provider review.
  • Provider Scribe Duties: Capture real‑time clinical notes, orders, and patient instructions during telehealth visits, ensuring documentation is clear, concise, and compliant with HIPAA.
  • Scheduling & Follow‑Up Management: Arrange follow‑up appointments, referrals, and ancillary services (e.g., imaging, physical therapy) based on provider directives.
  • Patient Education & Support: Distribute approved digital education materials, answer routine questions, and direct complex concerns to the appropriate clinician or RN.
  • Clerical & Supply Oversight: Maintain virtual inventory of remote testing kits, manage electronic supply orders, and perform routine quality checks of telehealth equipment.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate in daily huddles, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives with on‑site staff, fostering a unified approach to patient care.

Essential Qualifications – What You Bring to the Team

Required Education & Certifications

  • Medical Assistant Pathway: High school diploma or GED + graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program (community college, university, or approved vocational school).
  • Certification: Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential from a recognized certifying body (AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT, or AMCA). New hires after July 1 2024 must hold this certification at hire; those hired between July 1 2021 and June 30 2024 have a six‑month window to obtain it.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS): AHA‑approved BLS certification obtained within 60 days of employment.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Completion of an approved nursing program (associate degree or diploma) leading to LPN licensure.
  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) registration with the South Dakota Board of Nursing (or applicable state board for remote work).
  • Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience in an ambulatory, primary‑care, or telehealth setting.
  • Demonstrated experience with electronic health records (Epic, Cerner, or similar) and telemedicine platforms.
