About the Role: Special Education Teacher - ASD Program

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Special Education Teacher to join our team at Northeast Elementary School, specifically in our Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) program. This program is tailored to meet the unique needs of students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, focusing on behavioral, social, and learning challenges. As a Special Education Teacher in this program, you will play a pivotal role in delivering instruction utilizing ABA methodology under the supervision of a BCBA, ensuring that each student receives personalized support to achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate facility in the skills of reading, writing, and mathematics, and apply this knowledge to create engaging and effective lesson plans.
  • Plan instruction to achieve selected objectives, involving those appropriate for exceptional students, and effectively implement these plans using appropriate instructional techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues to foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
  • Help students develop positive self-concepts and facilitate their independence as learners, promoting autonomy and self-advocacy skills.
  • Effectively organize time, space, materials, and equipment for instruction, ensuring a well-structured and productive learning environment.
  • Assess student needs and progress, using data to drive educational decision-making and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
  • Establish a positive learning environment that is inclusive, respectful, and conducive to the academic and personal growth of all students.
  • Meet professional responsibilities, including continuing education and professional development, to stay current with best practices in special education.
  • Encourage and maintain the cooperative involvement and support of parents and the community, recognizing the importance of partnerships in student success.

Essential Qualifications:

To be considered for this role, you must possess a Connecticut Teaching Certificate in Comprehensive Special Education (165), K-12, and have a record of demonstrated superior performance as a special education teacher. You should also have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the field of special education, including experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and the ability to supervise Educational Assistants.
  • Ability to solve problems and execute responsibilities with integrity, ethics, and a high standard of professionalism.
  • Capacity to communicate effectively with students, staff members, and parents, fostering positive relationships and collaboration.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to maintain pertinent data, analyze it, and implement exclusionary practices/co-teaching as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Dual certification in TESOL, Bilingual Education, or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English.
  • Experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and implementing ABA methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Operating Systems, Office suites, Presentation Software, Spreadsheets, Communication and Collaboration tools, and Student Information Systems.
  • A strong commitment to ongoing professional development, with a willingness to learn and implement new technologies and instructional strategies.
