About DICK’S Sporting Goods – Empowering Athletes Through Innovation

DICK’S Sporting Goods isn’t just a retailer; it’s a cultural movement that believes sports can transform lives. From the first time a child laces up a pair of shoes to the moment a seasoned athlete conquers a personal best, DICK’S is there, providing the gear, expertise, and inspiration that fuel those milestones. With a heritage spanning more than eight decades, the company has grown into a national leader in sport‑focused retail, offering everything from outdoor equipment to the latest performance apparel.

At the heart of DICK’S is a people‑centric philosophy. Customers are called Athletes and employees are known as Teammates. This language reflects the collaborative spirit that drives every decision, whether it’s designing a seamless online checkout, curating an immersive in‑store experience, or building cutting‑edge technology that puts the power of personalization in the hands of every shopper. As part of the technology organization, you will join a community that celebrates curiosity, champions inclusion, and relentlessly pursues innovative solutions that make sport more accessible for everyone.

Why Join Our Remote Product Design Team?

We recognize that great design doesn’t happen behind a closed door – it happens where diverse perspectives intersect, wherever teammates are located. Our remote‑first model empowers you to work from any U.S. location while staying tightly connected to a vibrant, cross‑functional community. From virtual escape rooms that spark creativity to live‑streamed cheering sessions for the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, we blend fun, collaboration, and purpose into a cohesive experience.

As a Product Designer at DICK’S, you will:

  • Shape the digital experience of millions of athletes across web, mobile, and in‑store touchpoints.
  • Partner with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and marketing creatives to translate business goals into human‑centered designs.
  • Champion inclusive design practices that reflect the rich diversity of the communities we serve.
  • Grow your expertise through mentorship, continuous learning opportunities, and exposure to a variety of product domains – from secure account login flows to content management systems and cutting‑edge retail analytics platforms.

Position Overview – Remote Product Designer (Multiple Openings)

This posting represents several open positions – entry‑level (Product Designer I) and mid‑level (Product Designer II) – across a spectrum of technology teams within DICK’S Sporting Goods. The roles are fully remote, with immediate start dates available. Whether you are passionate about secure authentication experiences, digital content authoring, in‑store technology, or data‑driven athlete personalization, there is a place for your design talent on our product squads.

In each team, you will apply human‑centered design (HCD) principles to solve complex business challenges, craft intuitive interfaces, and create seamless experiences that inspire confidence and excitement for our athletes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Discovery – Conduct stakeholder workshops, develop stakeholder maps, and define discovery strategies that align with product objectives. Leverage mixed‑methods research (surveys, interviews, usability testing) to identify user pain points and business opportunities.
  • Research & Insight Generation – Execute generative and evaluative research, synthesize quantitative and qualitative data, and translate findings into actionable design recommendations and problem statements.
  • Concept Ideation & Prototyping – Generate low‑ to high‑fidelity prototypes using tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD. Explore multiple design directions, test hypotheses through rapid experimentation, and iterate based on feedback.
  • Design Execution & System Integration – Apply DICK’S Homefield design system to create consistent, accessible UI components. Collaborate closely with engineers to ensure design fidelity during development, participating in sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, and design reviews.
  • Usability Testing & Validation – Conduct A/B tests, remote usability sessions, and heuristic evaluations to validate design decisions before launch. Use insights to refine interactions and improve key metrics such as conversion, retention, and satisfaction.
  • Feedback Loop & Continuous Improvement – Establish mechanisms for collecting post‑launch feedback (analytics, customer support tickets, surveys). Monitor usage trends, identify opportunities for iterative enhancements, and champion a culture of data‑driven design.
  • Collaboration & Communication – Serve as a liaison between design, product management, engineering, and business stakeholders. Present design rationales clearly, advocate for the user perspective, and influence decisions without formal authority.
  • Mentorship & Growth (for Product Designer II) – Guide junior designers, share best practices, and contribute to the evolution of the design community within DICK’S.

Essential Qualifications (Must‑Have)

  • Foundational understanding of product design, user experience (UX), and user interface (UI) principles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams (engineers, product managers, marketers, content creators).
  • Portfolio showcasing a human‑centered design process, from research through final visual design, with clear evidence of problem solving and impact.
  • Experience conducting generative research methods (interviews, contextual inquiry, diary studies) and applying mixed‑methods analysis.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, and familiarity with prototyping platforms (InVision, Maze, etc.).
  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and ability to work within agile/scrum frameworks.
  • Curious mindset, eagerness to learn, and a passion for staying current with design trends, accessibility standards, and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to balance business objectives with user needs, making evidence‑based decisions that drive measurable outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice‑to‑Have)

  • 2+ years of professional product design experience (for Level I) or 4+ years (for Level II).
  • Experience designing secure authentication flows, content management systems (e.g., Adobe Experience Manager), or retail‑focused mobile applications.
  • Knowledge of inclusive design best practices and accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1).
  • Familiarity with data visualization, dashboards, or athlete‑centric personalization platforms.
  • Background in e‑commerce, omnichannel retail, or sports‑related industries.
  • Exposure to lean product management, design thinking, or double‑diamond frameworks.
  • Proven track record of launching products that delivered measurable business impact (e.g., increased sign‑ups, higher conversion rates, reduced friction).

Core Skills & Competencies for Success

  • Human‑Centered Design Thinking – Ability to empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test in a structured, iterative manner.
  • Analytical Mindset – Comfortable interpreting data, spotting trends, and turning insights into design actions.
  • Visual Design Excellence – Strong grasp of typography, color theory, layout, and responsive design principles.
  • Collaboration & Influence – Skilled at building relationships, negotiating trade‑offs, and guiding cross‑functional teams toward a shared vision.
  • Adaptability – Thrive in a fast‑paced, evolving environment; embrace ambiguity and pivot when new information emerges.
  • Attention to Detail – Ensure pixel‑perfect implementation while balancing broader strategic goals.
  • Technical Literacy – Familiarity with front‑end development concepts (HTML, CSS, basic JavaScript) to facilitate seamless handoff to engineers.

Career Growth & Learning Opportunities

At DICK’S we view every project as a classroom. As a remote Product Designer, you will have access to:

  • Leadership Pathways – Clear progression from Product Designer I to Senior Designer, Lead Designer, and eventually Design Manager or Director of Design.
