Marketing & Communications is the creative powerhouse behind the BPL brand, responsible for promoting and connecting Brooklynites to the Library’s world-class programs, collections and services. The 15-person department serves as an in-house marketing, PR and design shop for the departments and branches that make up the organization.
The Communications Associate is a part of BPL’s Marketing & Communications (MAC) Team. The Communications Associate should be a gifted storyteller and editor who is able to write across multiple platforms for a variety of audiences and reading levels. The ideal candidate will be an energetic self-starter who believes deeply in the Library’s mission and can express, through engaging, concise and accurate language, its importance to Brooklyn’s 2.7 million residents.
This is a full-time, non-union, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $57,600. This position is hybrid, requiring on-site work three days a week.
Responsibilities
Assist in the preparation of press materials and marketing collateral
Proofread and edit materials created by MAC
Work independently and as part of the creative team to deliver engaging copy for print, web, and press
Assist with handling media requests, pitching coverage and maintaining in-house PR documents, including press lists, media advisories and press releases.
Monitor media coverage and disseminate clips for library staff
Work with library staff and external consultants to identify pressworthy opportunities
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree required
1-3 years of professional experience
Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
Experience proofreading and copyediting with meticulous attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet fast-paced deadlines
Rigorous fact-checking and research abilities
Ability to write clearly and concisely in a variety of styles for diverse audiences
Preferred
Previous experience writing for a communications or marketing department of a non-profit organization is preferred
Experience following AP style guidelines
Experience with email-building platforms and html
