Volunteer Youth Tutor Opportunity in New York City
Join the International Rescue Committee's mission to make a positive impact in the lives of refugee and immigrant youth! We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated volunteer to serve as a Youth Tutor, providing academic support, homework help, and English language development to students in grades K-12.
About the Role:
As a Youth Tutor, you will have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of immigrant and refugee youth in New York City. This volunteer position is based in our innovative office, with flexible remote work arrangements. You will work closely with our team to provide linguistically supportive, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed learning opportunities.
Responsibilities:
- Provide tutoring, homework help, essay writing/editing, and English language development support to refugee and immigrant youth, grades K-12
- Work with 1-3 students per day, submitting case notes on each student's progress within 24 hours of the session
- Support students with homework and assignments across various academic subjects and English language development levels
- Complete online professional development modules and attend training sessions
- Uphold IRC policies and practices, promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment
Requirements:
- Clear IRC background check
- Completion of IRC Youth Tutor training modules
- Demonstrated reliability, flexibility, and commitment to education
- Ability to communicate effectively in English; fluency in an IRC high-frequency language (e.g., Spanish, Dari/Farsi, Pashto) preferred
- Respect for clients and staff from diverse backgrounds

Location and Schedule:
The IRC NYC Resettlement Office is located at 263 W. 38th St., Floor 6, NY, NY 10018. All programming will be online Monday-Friday, with in-person Saturday programming. Volunteers are expected to sign up for 1-4 slots per week, with available time slots on:
- Tuesday - Friday: 4-6 PM EST
- Saturdays: 11 AM-1 PM EST
