Job Summary

We're looking for a highly skilled and motivated Teacher and Assistant Band Director to lead and manage our instrumental music program. As a vital member of our team, you'll be responsible for directing and managing the overall program, ensuring compliance with state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements, and providing students with opportunities to participate in extracurricular band activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Planning:
    • Assist in directing high school instrumental performers, including marching band, orchestra, concert band, soloists, and ensembles.
    • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student's eligibility to participate in band.
    • Plan and coordinate band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL activities.
    • Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Budget and Inventory:
    • Manage budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
    • Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
    • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
    • Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.
  • Instruction:
    • Develop and implement plans for the instrumental music program, showing written evidence of preparation as required.
    • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
    • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
    • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Student Management:
    • Enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
    • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Communication:
    • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
    • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Personnel Management:
    • Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band directors.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for this role, you'll need to meet the following essential qualifications:

  • Education/Certification:
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Valid Texas teaching certificate.
  • Special Knowledge/Skills:
    • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music programs.
    • Ability to manage budget and personnel.
    • Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band.
    • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience:
    • Three years of teaching and band directing experience.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with curriculum development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of marching band techniques and show design.
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations and community groups.
